The real key to doing the bench press properly, however, is to pay close attention to your form and not to rush through the exercises. It is better for you to lift less weight and to do it properly than to throw the weight around, which will not do you much good.

Modified versions of the bench press are also an excellent idea. For example, you can work out different areas of the chest by either doing incline or decline bench press. If you are unfamiliar with doing these, you might want to have a spotter as it can be a little bit different than doing a standard flat press.

Flies are also an excellent chest exercise and can help to define the chest in a number of different ways. These can either be done with dumbbells while you’re lying on the bench or their are plenty of machines at most gyms which will mimic the movements. These are an excellent secondary exercise for you to do after your bench press is done.

Most people tend to shy away from these, simply because using a barbell looks better whenever people are watching. The fact of the matter is, however, you can work the stabilizer muscles and get a lot stronger if you make each arm work independently of the other. Most times, you can also do dumbbell presses without a spotter as they will simply drop to the sides if you happen to tire out.

Finally, you will want to work the legs doing squats and dead lifts in order to build the chest muscles. This may sound strange to you, but you would be surprised with how well it works. Whenever you work these muscles properly, it releases chemicals into the body that cause the body to grow muscle. The muscle is not confined to the area of the legs, it also builds muscles in other areas of the body, including the chest. By being well-rounded in the types of exercises that you are doing, you would be surprised with the growth that you will recognize.
